The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
